JOB SUMMARY:  This position is located in the Community Recreation Department of Morale, Welfare and Recreation, aboard Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida. The purpose of this position is to perform manual labor tasks in support of the assigned facilities.

MAJOR DUTIES: This position may perform some or all of the following duties as assigned:

Food/Beverage Service Facilities: Carries supplies and equipment, such as fruits, glasses, linens and flatware from storage areas to the bar or dining area. Fills ice bins and crushes ice. Cleans equipment in kitchen and dining area. Washes dishes, pots, pans, coffee urns, glasses, and flatware. Operates a mechanical dishwasher, washing large items by hand. Sorts, stacks and stores cleaned dishware. May be required to clean cooking and other food service equipment, scraping, washing or wiping down equipment such as ranges, ovens, electric or gas fryers, pressure cookers, steam kettles and broilers. Drains and cleans coffee and tea urns. Scrubs/scours worktables and cleans grease traps in sinks. Removes soiled dishes, glasses and flatware from the tables and carries to the dishwashing area. Clears and cleans dining tables. Disposes of food waste and trash.

All Facilities: Loads/unloads, transports and stores supplies, equipment or other items. Performs basic cleaning such as: sweeping/mopping floors, dusting, straightening customer service areas such as lobbies, exercise rooms, etc. dusting furniture/equipment, cleaning glass. Assists with cleaning bathroom/shower/locker room and car wash areas or assisting with general maintenance such as touchup painting, replacing light bulbs, washing/drying and replenishing towels, or stocking soap/paper towels/toilet paper.
Performs general lawn care tasks such as cutting grass, edging/weed eating, pulling weeds, raking, and shoveling. Upon completion of tasks, cleans and properly stores equipment after use. Picks up debris and empties all trash receptacles daily. Notifies the supervisor immediately of any missing items and equipment malfunctions needing repair.
Sets up room(s) according to supervisor instructions. Insures all needed equipment is in working condition. Breaks down room(s) upon completion of the function. Stores equipment used or re-sets room for the next function/activity. Assists in unloading and loading of trucks. Opens, unpacks and removes content of cartons and stores in assigned locations.

NA3 Facility Assistant: In addition to the above, vacuums carpeted areas; sweeps, mops, waxes and buffs other flooring surfaces using automatic waxing or buffing machines. Washes walls, windows, blinds and other surfaces and replaces light bulbs as needed using ladders or scaffolding to reach higher areas. Polishes furniture and other woodwork or brass. Maintains restrooms and locker rooms ensuring they are clean, orderly and sanitary by cleaning, disinfecting and deodorizing lavatories, urinals and toilet bowls. Replenishes bathroom tissue, hand towels and soap. Notifies supervisor when cleaning supplies are needed.

NA4 Facility Assistant: In addition to the above, Operates a variety of power operated tools and equipment such as chain saws, hedge trimmers, tillers, hoes, chippers, tractors, trucks, pressure washers, etc. Services equipment before use, making adjustments or minor repairs through replacement of worn or damaged parts. Assists higher graded workers with general facility maintenance such as minor repairs to doors, floors/floor coverings, walls, ceilings, windows, light fixtures, painting, etc.
Assists in the general upkeep and maintenance of athletic fields and surrounding grounds. Prepares and maintains athletic fields for respective play (lines fields, places bases, secures windscreens, installs goals/goalposts, moves bleachers, etc.) making repairs as needed or directed, OR assists in general upkeep of recreational areas and grounds (RV Park, Beach, Camping Areas, Picnic/Event Grounds, Recreational Cabins) including maintaining grounds (mowing/weeding, maintaining ornamental plan beds) minor maintenance/repair of picnic tables, barbeque areas, tent/RV sites, parking areas, emptying large trash containers and disposal of trash.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

NA2: Must be 16 years of age. No previous training or work experience is required. Must possess the ability to follow simple verbal and written instructions and carry out assigned duties independently. This position is subject to an irregular tour of duty including seasonal work lasting 1-4 months; evenings, weekends and holidays.

NA3: Must be 18 years of age and meet all qualifications listed above PLUS knowledge of basic cleaning and janitorial techniques and procedures. Must possess the ability to work with basic equipment, materials and supplies used in maintaining the assigned facility in a clean, sanitary state. This position is subject to an irregular tour of duty including seasonal work lasting 1-4 months; evenings, weekends and holidays. A valid driver's license is preferred.

NA4: Must be 18 years of age and meet all qualifications listed above, PLUS the ability to operate and perform routine maintenance and repair on tractor and a variety of equipment used in preparing athletic fields and facilities for sporting events. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license at all times and have the ability to operate a variety of automotive vehicles in the performance of duties. This position is subject to an irregular tour of duty including weekends and holidays.

RESPONSIBILITY

This position works under the general supervision of the shift manager who assigns work and spot checks work in progress to ensure procedures are followed and that work is completed within a rigid specified period of time. Problems and questions are referred to the shift manager.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical activities include, but are not limited to standing, walking, bending, turning, stooping, twisting, reaching, pushing, pulling and light lifting. Some activities are prolonged in nature. The employee will at times, lift up to 45 pounds unassisted, heavier items are with assistance. The employee is subject to exposure to extreme temperatures from dishwasher/kitchens and walk-in refrigerators/freezers. Outside work is subject to a variety of weather conditions. Working area is subject to noise. The employee is subject to minor cuts, bruises, burns and falls. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is issued and used as needed. If issued, PPE must be worn appropriately.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

May be reassigned on an "as needed" basis to other facilities to cover staff shortages or assist with scheduled events.

Food/Beverage Service Facilities: Must obtain a Health Card prior to first day of work. Afterwards, must successfully pass a Food Handlers Sanitation course, thereafter to be updated and maintained annually.

NOTE:  Some positions have special requirements. Selection may be tentative pending the completion of the satisfactory employment reference checks and receipt of proof of education (where applicable).
